.25 linear feet (1 box)Contains correspondence, account books, deeds, legal papers, financial records, and other materials, chiefly produced in Massachusetts, concerning Pickering's property, personal finance, political views, in specie verification of fruits, and other topics. Includes: incomplete draft of political letter dated Washington, March 19, 1810, which was found in the Corporation Records of Harvard College; "Alphabet for specie certificates issued from the quarter master general's office commencing at number 501"; and other materials.
Biographical / Historical
Timothy Pickering Jr. (1745-1829) was a politician from Massachusetts, who was the third United States Secretary of State (1795-1800) under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Deacon Timothy and Mary Wingate Pickering. Pickering received an AB from Harvard College in 1763. He also served in the Massachusetts militia and Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
