Most of the items in this collection were created in New England, though there are a few from Michigan, New York, New Jersey and other locations. Series I includes: account books; cashbooks; commonplace book; composition books; copy books; daybooks; diaries; essays; grade book; lecture notes; notes; printed fliers and reports; receipts; records; and other items. Series II includes materials created as copies of textbooks (copybooks) or notes, and all are of a numerical nature. Subjects include: surveying, arithmetic, geometry, and navigation.

Biographical / Historical

These volumes were transferred to Houghton Library from the New England Deposit Library (NEDL) at the time that NEDL was being closed. The volumes all were owned by the Harvard College Library and were classed in the call-number range of "XT 7" or "Educ".

The manuscript volumes that were in the German language and were formerly part of this collection (2004M-45) have been removed and have been cataloged as MS Ger 319. The Italian language materials have been cataloged as MS Ital 200.
