Includes autograph manuscript text combined with drawings to form rebuses, allusional devices using pictures to represent words or parts of words. Also includes: a visiting card of Dix, and one of Miss Georgie A. Starin, and the ribbon that formerly tied this material as a package. A few rebuses are written on the verso of printed items for the Penn Club House and Mr. Marshall's Dramatic Readings (tickets from 1855).

Biographical / Historical

Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802-1887) was an American educator, social reformer, and humanitarian. During the American Civil War, she served as Superintendent of Army Nurses.
