Biographical / Historical
IUrii Nikiforovich Danilov [Юрий Никифорович Данилов] (1866-1937) was a Russian career officer who rose to the rank of infantry general, and at the start of World War I was appointed deputy chief of staff to Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, the commander in chief of the Russian army in 1914. In 1915 after Nicholas II assumed the command, Danilov was dispatched to command the 25th army corps, and later served as chief of staff to the commander of the Northern Front. In that capacity he witnessed the abdication of Nicholas II in March 1917. Danilov resigned after the Revolution, but in 1918 was summoned by the War Ministry to accompany the Soviet delegation at the Brest-Litovsk peace conference as one of a group of three military experts. Danilov left Russia in 1920 and settled in France. He spent the remaining years of his life writing on the World War I, teaching at the French military academy and Russian-French military institute, and coordinating efforts to assist other Russian compatriots. He died in France in 1937.
