Biographical / Historical

A fire fighting society founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in April of 1810 for the relief of those whose lives or property were endangered by fire. According to their bylaws, the society would have no more than 30 members, with regular meetings and dues, with elected officers of a chairman, clerk, treasurer, and 5 wardens, and each member would have 2 good leather buckets (marked with his name) and 1 bag and bed-key. When a fire alarm was sounded, each member would take his equipment and go to the fire site to help extinguish the fire. Loss of equipment at fires would be paid for by the society. Failure to attend meetings or pay fines and dues could result in loss of membership. The society was disbanded in January of 1897.
