Biographical / Historical
The Dante Society of America is an association of Dante scholars, mostly professors at American universities. The society was formerly based at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1881 by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and Charles Eliot Norton (the Society's first three presidents) and others, and is the second oldest officially constituted organization in the world (after the Deutsche Dante-Gesellschaft, founded in 1865) dedicated to the encouragement of the study and appreciation of the time, life, works, and cultural legacy of Dante Alighieri.
