Autograph manuscript, unsigned, sermons by Tristram Gilman (some loose and some bound into volumes); with sermons and other texts by Gilman's father, Nicholas Gilman. Most sermons include notes of the dates and locations around New England when the sermons were delivered and many of these sermons have sections at the end marked: "Applications" or "Improvements." Sermons based on verses from Isaiah, Romans, Exodus, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and other books of the Bible. Also includes a few autograph manuscript other compositions by Tristram Gilman.

Biographical / Historical

Tristram Gilman (1735-1809) was born in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1735. He received an AB in 1757 from Harvard College. Gilman was a Congregational clergyman, of North Yarmouth, Maine, pastor of First Church in North Yarmouth. He later was a trustee of Bowdoin College and the first president of the Maine Missionary Society. His father was a minister in New Hampshire, Nicholas Gilman (1708-1748; Harvard AB 1724, AM 1727).
