Immediate Source of Acquisition

89M-27. Manuscripts transferred from the Garden Library, Dumbarton Oaks, Washington D.C.; received: 1973 and 24 July 1989.

Provenance and former processing:

This collection of Erik Satie papers is composed of two different collections. In 1938 a small acquisition was made by Mildred Bliss, Dumbarton Oaks, from Sybil Harris, who had been a friend and patron of young Parisian artists in the 1920s. The manuscripts [nos. (12),(70),(95),(100),(102),(105)], and a printed piano score of Piege de Meduse [*FC9.Sa832.921p] were deposited at the Library of Congress, and some still carry the library's bookplate.

The main part of the present collection was owned by Darius Milhaud, who found these manuscripts in Satie's apartment after the composer's death in 1925 and took them to the US in 1940. He mounted an exhibition of the entire collection at Mills College, Oakland, California. The typescript catalogue was numbered in Arabic, 1-105. In about 1960 almost the entire collection was acquired by Mildred Bliss. At Dumbarton Oaks, a new list was compiled in 1963 of the Harris and Milhaud materials using Roman numbering I-LXXVII.

After Mildred Bliss's death and the taking over of her estate by Harvard University, some items were transferred to the Houghton Library. The Satie collection came in 1973 and 1989. Before it could be fully catalogued, scholars used and published the material using the old numbers from the Mills College list, and even provided them with a "Ho" siglum. To enable users to identify manuscripts in the present numbering system, two concordances are added at the end of this finding aid.

Repository Details

Part of the Houghton Library Repository

Houghton Library is Harvard College's principal repository for rare books and manuscripts, archives, and more. Houghton Library's collections represent the scope of human experience from ancient Egypt to twenty-first century Cambridge. With strengths primarily in North American and European history, literature, and culture, collections range in media from printed books and handwritten manuscripts to maps, drawings and paintings, prints, posters, photographs, film and audio recordings, and digital media, as well as costumes, theater props, and a wide range of other objects. Houghton Library has historically focused on collecting the written record of European and Eurocentric North American culture, yet it holds a large and diverse number of primary sources valuable for research on the languages, culture and history of indigenous peoples of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Houghton Library’s Reading Room is free and open to all who wish to use the library’s collections.
