This collection documents all aspects of Gamonet’s career as a dancer, choreographer, and artistic director including awards and commissions, his workshop for choreographers, collaborations with composers, the Miami City Ballet, of which Gamonet was founding Resident Choreographer and Ballet Master 1986-1999, and Ballet Gamonet, the company he created and directed 2004-2009. Material present includes notebooks, scores, set and costume designs, correspondence, audiovisual recordings, programs, photographs, posters, and ephemera.

Biographical / Historical

Jimmy Gamonet de los Heros was born in Lima, Peru, where he discovered ballet as a teenager. He was part of the cast of the Peruvian Ballet, the Modern Chamber Ballet, and the Ballet Nacional del Perú under the direction of Vera Stastny, as well as Ballet du Nord in France. He joined Ballet Oklahoma (now Oklahoma City Ballet) under the direction of Edward Villella; when Villella became the founding artistic director of Miami City Ballet in 1985, he brought Gamonet to be resident choreographer, a post he held until 2000. Gamonet founded Ballet Gamonet in 2004 and directed it until 2009; he was artistic director of the Ballet Nacional del Perú from 2015-2021. As a choreographer, his repertory is comprised of over 50 ballets that have been presented around the world.
