Biographical / Historical

John Robert Greene is an expert on the U.S. presidency. He produced these papers in the course of preparing a talk and later publication concerning the libel suit involving William Barnes and Theodore Roosevelt.

A libel suit was brought against Theodore Roosevelt in Syracuse (N.Y.) in April 1915 by William Barnes, whom Roosevelt had publicly called "a political boss of the most obnoxious type." The judge in the case ruled in Roosevelt's favor in May 1915.
