Historical Note

Harold Brodkey’s Paris Review interview regarding “The Art of Fiction” was conducted by PR managing editor James Linville in five sessions over a period of three years, and appeared in the winter 1991 issue of the magazine. The transcripts were cut and pasted to form a coherent text that was collaboratively edited multiple times by Brodkey, Paris Review publisher George Plimpton, and Linville.
