Scope and Contents

Information about the content of this series comes chiefly from donor-prepared lists. The physical material does not always follow the order of the subseries, however, as the boxes were not packed in that order; when unpacking, Houghton staff did their best to check against the list, but material may show up in the wrong subseries occaisonally. For instance, material on the lists supposed to be included in the "Harvard" series may be found physically and within this finding aid under the "wrong" subseries. For that reason, researchers are encouraged to use keyword searching within this finding aid.

"Year files" comprise materials from a particular year organized according to the "JA filing system", a system created by David Kermani and associates in 2002 and applied retroactively to 2000-2001. "Day files" are organized in the same way. "Archived" files seem to be files kept before the adoption of the filing system but organized along the same lines. Year and day files may contain original and reproduced correspondence in various stages, publication files, letters of recommendation, household files, organization and publishing files, files about translations and about plays, prose, poems, photographs, houses, family, interviews, conversations, and collaborations.

Repository Details

Part of the Houghton Library Repository

Houghton Library is Harvard College's principal repository for rare books and manuscripts, archives, and more. Houghton Library's collections represent the scope of human experience from ancient Egypt to twenty-first century Cambridge. With strengths primarily in North American and European history, literature, and culture, collections range in media from printed books and handwritten manuscripts to maps, drawings and paintings, prints, posters, photographs, film and audio recordings, and digital media, as well as costumes, theater props, and a wide range of other objects. Houghton Library has historically focused on collecting the written record of European and Eurocentric North American culture, yet it holds a large and diverse number of primary sources valuable for research on the languages, culture and history of indigenous peoples of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Houghton Library’s Reading Room is free and open to all who wish to use the library’s collections.
