Scope and Contents

Series VI. Asian Journal of Thomas Merton papers, 1969-1974, concern the editing and publication (New Directions, 1973) of Thomas Merton's "The Asian Journal of Thomas Merton." The book was edited from Merton's original notebooks by Naomi Burton Stone, Patrick Hart, and James Laughlin. Consulting editor for this project was Amiya Chakravarty. The "Asian Journal" is Merton's recording of his journey to the Orient begun 1968 Oct. 5. This series of papers also concerns the Merton Legacy Trust. Includes correspondence, edited manuscripts, photocopies of original Merton letters and compositions (originals not at the Houghton Library but at the Merton Center at Bellarmine College, Kentucky), printer's working documents, publication miscellany, reviews, book orders, corrections to published text, etc.

Most of collection has no restrictions on physical access. Series VII. Audiotapes is restricted from use due to fragile condition. These tapes may not be used without permission of the Curator of Manuscripts.
