Harvard Film Archive Cinematheque Program Calendar and Periodical Collection

Overview

The Harvard Film Archive Cinematheque Collection consists of film program calendars from the Harvard Film Archive from 1984 until 2007. In addition, the collection consists of programming calendars from fifty different archives, cinematheques, and museums, as well as a small collection of film journals, festival programs, and newsletters from the period of approximately 1970-2006.

Language of Materials

Majority of material is in English, with the exception of program calendars for the National Film Center (Tokyo, Japan) in Japanese, and an issue of the film journal, Parachute, in French.

Access Restrictions

There are no restrictions on physical access to this material. Collection is open for research.

The Harvard Film Archive's manuscript collections and paper-based materials are accessed through the Houghton Library Reading Room.

This collection is shelved offsite at the Harvard Depository. Retrieval requires advance notice. Researchers should check with Houghton Public Services staff to determine retrieval policies and times.

The Harvard Film Archive Cinematheque Collection consists of film program calendars from the Harvard Film Archive from 1984 until 2007. (Complete calendar listings from 1999-present are accessible on the HFA's website.) The collection also includes programming calendars from fifty different archives, cinematheques, and museums collected by the HFA's programming office, representing film programming at American archives and festivals from the period of approximately 1970-2006 and also including a small selection from Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. A small collection of film journals, festival programs, and newsletters rounds out the collection.

The collected program calendars and periodicals, along with the run of HFA calendars available in print and online from 1984 to the present provide a breadth of information on not only the institutional history of the Harvard Film Archive, but of overall independent and archival screening and curation practices and themes at cultural institutions and festivals during this time period.

Acquisition Information

Materials in this collection were accumulated by the programming staff of the Harvard Film Archive from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s.

The Harvard Film Archive is one of the largest university-based motion picture collections in the United States, with a collection of 40,000 audio visual items, a growing number of manuscript collections, and nearly one million still photographs, posters, and other promotional materials from around the world and from almost every period in film history. The HFA's collection of paper materials, including the documentation of individual filmmakers as well as promotional materials such as posters, film stills, and ephemera are accessible to Harvard affiliates as well as to outside researchers.
