Japan Digital

Scope and Contents

Includes Japan Plants which is a list of plant names in Gray's handwriting containing descriptions of Japanese plants, arranged systematically. That is followed by what appears to be the detailed report on plants alluded to by Gray in Diagnostic characters of New Species of Phaenogamous Plants, collected in Japan by Charles Wright, Botanist of the U.S. North Pacific Exploring Expedition published in Mem. Amer. Acad. 6:377-452. The article was described as a brief report on novelties pending publication of the full reports of the expedition. Full reports were never published, in part due to the outbreak of the Civil War.
