Clark University Herbarium card file and photographs
Scope and Content
This collection consists of an index card file of hepaticae and musci of Worcester County, Massachusetts, and a series of photographs of hepatics and mosses taken from 1908-1921.
Each index card has a plant name and a grid of town names with checkmarks, presumably indicating where specimens were collected. There are 15 photographs, some of which are labeled: "Hepaticae: A group of photographs of hepaticae taken by Miss Helen Greenwood about 1908-1921 have been verified by William Rissanen."

Clark University:
Clark University is a private, non-sectarian teaching and research institution founded in 1887 by Jonas Gilman Clark as the first all-graduate school in the United States.
Helen Evangeline Greenwood:
Helen Evangeline Greenwood was born on July 1, 1872, in Holden, Massachusetts. She studied botany at Wellesley College and completed a B.A. in 1896 and an M.A. in 1906. She was a high school teacher for most of her life, first in Oxford, Massachusetts and later at the Worcester High School of Commerce. Greenwood was an amateur photographer and poet and editor of “Nature Outlook,” the journal of the Worcester Natural History Society.
Greenwood was particularly interested in hepatics (liverworts) and made collections in the vicinity of Worcester and on Mt. Desert Island, Maine. She published several articles in “The Bryologist.” She taught a few classes on bryology to the Worcester Natural History Society and, in collaboration with Alice C. Kendall, established a moss herbarium for the Society which was deposited at Clark University.
Greenwood retired in 1942 and donated her personal herbarium to Wellesley College. She died in Worcester on January 25, 1953.

Provenance
This collection contains what appears to be an inventory of specimens in the Farlow Herbarium collections that were previously owned by the Clark University Herbarium. Clark University no longer maintains a herbarium; portions of its collections were transferred to the Harvard University Herbarium in the 1980s. This collection was likely transferred at the same time.

The Harvard University Herbaria houses five research libraries that are managed collectively as the Botany Libraries. The Farlow Reference Library of Cryptogamic Botany specializes in organisms that reproduce by spores, without flowers or seeds. The Archives of the Farlow Herbarium of Cryptogamic Botany houses unique resources including personal papers, institutional records, field notes and plant lists, expedition records, photographs, original artwork, and objects from faculty, curators, staff, and affiliates of the Farlow Herbarium.
