Scope and Contents

Copy of a letter from Anne Sweeney to Mrs. Robert Philbrook informs her of a telephone inquiry from Mrs. Keltonasking to send some data in regards to Dumbarton Oaks which might be used as a basis for a paper to be read before her local garden club. Sweeney reports she told Mrs. Kelton there were no descriptive booklets on the gardens but she would send a booklet about the Dumbarton Oaks Collection and the work that is going on at Dumbarton Oaks along with a few pictures of the gardens. She says there was an article published on Dumbarton Oaks in October 1944 following the closing of the United Nations meetings held at there during the summer. Sweeney only has one copy of the article written by Beatrix Farrand who designed the grounds which she must keep for her files. She suggests Mrs. Philbrook might be able to get a reprint from Landscape Quarterly Magazine published in Chicago. Sweeney encloses a typescript copy of the historical tablet as well as a newspaper clipping which appeared in the Washington papers at the time of the gift to Harvard University in 1940. Anne Sweeney describes the garden landscape of terraces descending into a grove of Japanese cherry trees, and on the same level a garden catalogue house displaying colored prints of flowers, birds, and shrubs found growing on the place. She offers details on the house, when it was built, and when changes were made as well as when the garden is open to the public.
