Scope and Contents

Typescript letter with handwritten signature from Alden Hopkins to Mildred Bliss tells her he has received an estimate on the cost of the stonework and construction of the Lilac or Camellia Circle from Mr. [G. Morris] Steinbraker. He has gone over the requirements for this reconstruction on the ground with Mr. Steinbraker and pointed out that the wall cap must be the same as that toppingon the wall above the cutting garden. The work will be done in accordance to his drawing, #93-03 which was approved by her and Michael Rapuano. The estimated cost from G. Morris Steinbraker & Sons for the work is $3620 with an additional $600-$750 needed for the revived planting. The camellias can not be moved until the new growth has hardened the last of June. He suggests that when he returns in July that constuction start, so the evergreens may be planted in September and the bulbs in the correct time in October. The garden will be completed upon your return to Washington, D.C. in October. He asks for her comments on or approval on his suggested plan. Hopkins offers her best wishes for her travels this summer and tells her he is sailing for Naples via Lisbon and Barcellona on the 22nd. The estimate was enclosed with the letter. Copies of the letter also sent to John Thacher and Michael Rapuano.
