Representations of Iconographic Types of the Virgin Mary, 1940-1965

Scope and Contents

This subseries contains an overview of different representations of certain iconographic types of the Virgin Mary, i.e. Virgin Galaktotrophousa, Virgin Glikophilousa, Virgin Hodegetria, Virgin Nikopeia, and Virgin Orant. They are each represented on a separate sheet of paper detailing: its specific name (e.g. Umilenie Vladimirskaia), if applicable; a short historical background and bibliography, if known; and a black-and-white photograph of the icon, if available. A general bibliography on each iconographic type is also included.

Materials in the collection include English, French, and Russian.
