The William Cranch Bond Fifield papers, 1626-1970 (inclusive), 1841-1896 (bulk), consist of letters from various correspondents regarding medical and surgical cases, treatment and remedies, Fifield's memberships and activities in medical societies, and his professional appointments, as well as papers and correspondence of his father, Dr. Noah Fifield, his brother, George Fordyce Fifield, and physician Cotton Tufts, admission cards to Harvard Medical School lectures, and assorted printed documents.

The collection also contains papers and letters of other physicians, such as Benjamin Waterhouse (1754-1846) and John Warren (1753-1815); a note fragment by Abigail Adams (1744-1818) that includes a medical recipe; letters containing biographical information about Scottish surgeon Charles Bell (1774-1842); and circulars about autopsies and a smallpox outbreak in Boston.

Biographical Note

William Cranch Bond Fifield (1826-1896), M.D., 1851, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, M.R.C.S., 1854, Royal College of Surgeons, London, England, was a physician in Boston.

William Cranch Bond Fifield was born on August 27, 1826, in Weymouth, Massachusetts, to Hannah Cranch Bond (1787-1870) and Noah Fifield (1782-1867), a physician who practiced in Weymouth for sixty years. His mother was the sister of William Cranch Bond (1789-1859), first director of the Harvard Observatory. Fifield attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and graduated Harvard Medical School in 1851. He subsequently traveled abroad to study medicine in London at the Royal College of Surgeons, and in Paris. Upon his return, Fifield joined his father’s practice, then in 1861 moved to Dorchester. Fifield was a visiting surgeon at the Boston City Hospital for fifteen years.

He was a Fellow of the Massachusetts Medical Society and member of the Obstetric Society, Dorchester Medical Club, and the American Chirurgical Society.

Fifield married Emily Anna Porter in 1856, and they had three children. He died in Dorchester on September 10, 1896.
