VII. Military Records, 1946-1954., 1946-1954.

Scope and Contents

Consists of records chronicling Lowns’s military service, the rescinding of his commission and honorable discharge status as a result of his refusing to sign loyalty oaths and because of his involvement in student organizations which were later suspected of having communist ties by government officials. Also includes records resulting from the class-action lawsuit brought by Lown and other physicians. Due to the success of the lawsuit, Lown’s Officer Commission and honorable discharge status were reinstated, as well as the benefits earned from his service time. Records include correspondence with military officials, lawyers and co-plaintiffs, military service histories, appeal requests, medical records and copies of court documents.
