Scope and Contents

Consists of records documenting a broad range of personal and professional activities spanning most of Lown’s career. Records chronicle his motivational and organizational skills as a driving force behind numerous health-related organizations, public health initiatives such as Community Cardiology, his leadership developing cooperative international physician exchange programs, his leadership and inspiration as a faculty member, HSPH administrator, teacher, mentor, patient rights advocate, as a guest lecturer, and his efforts of peace activism while leading PSR and later IPPNW. Records span his tenure at HMS and HSPH, and also include organizational records resulting from his administrative roles at several institutions including PBBH and executive roles with ICIT, American Optical and Aspect Medical Systems. Records include clinical, laboratory and private practice cardiology research, patient records, research leading to the development of defibrillators and cardioverters, travel records including photographs from trips to China, Cuba and the USSR, and executive board records including meeting minutes and planning documents. Of special note are early records documenting the establishment and governance of PSR. It is unclear to what degree similar records found in other series in this collection duplicate or complement these files. Series II also contains photographs of the PBBH Coronary Care Unit, HSPH Fellows, Samuel A. Levine, and a cardioverter demonstration as well as 2 diskettes unevaluated for content.
