Biographical Note
Ezekiel Dodge Cushing (1790-1828), A.B., Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, M.D., Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, New Hampshire, was a physician practicing in Boston. He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society from 1819 until his death.
Ezekiel Dodge Cushing was born in Pembroke, Massachusetts, on 2 January 1790 to Mehetable Dodge (1763-1845) and Nathaniel Cushing (1762-1827). His father was a partner in the ironworks firm of Freeman & Cushing. His uncle, Ezekiel Goddard Dodge (1765-1819), was also a physician. After graduating Harvard College in 1808, he matriculated at Dartmouth Medical School, receiving his M.D. in 1811. While there he lived and practiced medicine with Dartmouth Medical School founder Nathan Smith (1762-1829). Following graduation from Dartmouth, Cushing attended medical lectures in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and studied overseas, first at St. Thomas Hospital, London, then at the Paris Hospital. He returned to the United States in 1814 and established his medical practice in Boston.
Cushing married Delia Sawyer (1798-1870) in 1815, and they had five children who survived to adulthood: Polly Cushing Ricketson (1816-1872), Nathaniel (1818-1864), Delia Cushing Cushman (born 1820), Lucy Cushing West (1824-1899), and Ellen Cushing Mair (1828-circa 1861). He died on 5 April 1828, in Hanson, Massachusetts.
