Historical Notes
The Harvard Medical School Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine (JPNM) was established in 1970 as a partnership among the Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, teaching hospitals to advance the study and practice of nuclear medicine, evaluate new technologies in the field, and provide leadership in the basic training and continuing education of physicians and health care professionals.
The JPNM’s initial partners were the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts) and Children’s Hospital Boston, Massachusetts. Subsequent Boston partners included Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, and the Veterans Administration’s VA Boston Healthcare System, Massachusetts. The Program was first housed in the Pediatric Research Building of Children’s Hospital, performing a variety of research and clinical tasks, including the preparation of radioindicators for use by partner clinics and research laboratories. Responsibility for all aspects of the JPNM’s operations is now managed through the radiology departments at each of the member hospitals.
The Harvard Medical School Joint Program in Nuclear Medicine was designed by S. James Adelstein (born 1928), Paul C. Cabot Distinguished Professor of Medical Biophysics and Quondam Daniel C. Tosteson University Professor, Harvard Medical School, when a Harvard Medical School Associate Professor of Radiology. Adelstein was a founder of the JPNM, and its first director. Other founding staff members include: Michael Davis; Mrinal Dewanjee; David Drum; B. Leonard Holman (1941-1998); Alun Jones (1941-2012); William Kaplan (died 1994); Barbara J. McNeil (born 1941); Lorna K. Mee; Eileen Prince; Salvador Treves; Kalbiye Yalaz; and Robert Zimmerman.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Records comprising this series were separated from the papers of S. J. Adelstein (H MS c362) by Center for the History of Medicine processing staff in April 2012.
Processing Information
Box and folder lists were prepared by Craig MacDonald, Spring 2011. The collection was processed by Hanna Clutterbuck, 2012 August.
Processing staff in the Center for the History of Medicine refoldered, reboxed, and described the records, and created a finding aid to improve access.
