Scope and Contents

Consists of meeting minutes, notes, correspondence, pamphlets, memoranda, clippings, reports, and other records of Mary Ellen Avery’s involvement and interactions with professional organizations, committees, publications, and institutions, including the National Institutes of Health, the Society for the Right to Die, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Pediatric Society, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Physicians for Social Responsibility, among others. Series includes records related to the Joint Program in Neonatology, a patient care, training, and research program initiated by Avery which, under the auspices of Harvard Medical School, formed “one nursery in three locations:” Beth Israel Hospital (now Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center), the Boston Hospital for Women (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital), and Children’s Hospital Medical Center (now Children’s Hospital, Boston). There is also correspondence and related materials regarding Avery’s involvement in legislative issues around topics such as abortion, euthanasia, government child services programs, federal funding for science programs and research, Medicare and Medicaid regulations, and drug regulations.
