K. World War II Photographs, 1942.

Scope and Contents

Contains a 1942 photograph (a print, framed print, and copy negative) of all the men in the WWII, Harvard University Medical Unit, posed with Dr. Elliott Carr Cutler. A list identifying the sitters is included. This box also contains a photograph of all the Nurses of the 5th General Hospital, dated January 9, 1942, and includes a list identifying the sitters. During WWI and II, U.S. Army Base Hospital #5, Harvard University Unit, was staffed largely by Peter Bent Brigham Hospital physicians and nurses. Dr. Cutler was Surgeon-in-Chief of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. During WWII, Dr. Cutler was promoted to Brigadier General and served as the Army's Surgeon-in-Charge of the European Theatre of Operations. Photocopied reference texts related to General Cutler and the 5th General Hospital are included. Titles are "Remarks on the Laying of the Cornerstone of the Cutler Army Hospital at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, 3 November 1969; “Fifth General Hospital Annual Report, 1944 [Unclassified]”, and Chapter II “The Chief Consultant in Surgery” from Surgery in World War II published by the Department of the Army in 1964.
