Biographical Note
Norman E. Himes (1899-1949), B.S., 1923, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, M.A., 1924, Harvard University, Ph.D., 1932, Harvard University, was a teacher and scholar in the fields of sociology and economics, with research interests in social reforms and cultural developments. His research frequently focused on: history of contraception and the birth control movement; marriage and family relations; and birth control (as a means to challenge what he saw as population problems).
Norman Edwin Himes was born in 1899 in Jersey City, New Jersey to Edward Himes, a moulder, and Sarah Himes. Himes was identified as white in the 1920 census. He received B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. From 1923 to 1925 he was a Robert Treat Payne Fellow in Social Ethics at Harvard, and from 1926 to 1927 he was a Travelling Fellow of the Social Science Research Council. He taught at Cornell College, Cornell, Iowa (Instructor in Economics and Sociology, 1925-1926); Simmons College and Simmons School of Social Work, Boston, Massachusetts (Instructor in Economics, 1928-1930); Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts (Associate Professor of Economics and Sociology, 1930-1931); and Colgate University, Hamilton, New York (Assistant Professor of Sociology, 1932-1938; Professor of Sociology, 1938-1942). Outside of academe, he served as a consultant to the National Committee on Maternal Health from 1932 to 1936, and he represented the United States at the 1937 International Population Conference in Paris, France. He was fired from Colgate in June 1941 and officially terminated in 1942. During World War II, Himes left the scholarly world for government service, serving in Washington, D.C. as a Major in the Office of the Surgeon General (1943-1944) and as a member of the War Manpower Commission (1944-1945). The following year, he was Professor of Sociology at Biarritz American University, a short-lived postwar school for G.I.s in Biarritz, France. He continued government work during the postwar period, specializing in adult education and youth programs. Working for the United States Office of Military Government in Germany, he was part of the Office of Special Education in Berlin beginning in 1946, and of the Information Services Division in Bremen, beginning in 1948.
Himes’ areas of study included marriage, birth control, and population. He believed that poor and disadvantaged people constituted the “wrong family stocks,” and that by reproducing, they were lowering the intelligence of the population (1). Himes corresponded extensively with many people—sociologists, economics, historians, medical practitioners, people in the publishing industry, and many others, regarding both personal and professional topics. Himes’ publications include Place on Population (editor, 1930); The Truth About Birth Control (1931); Guide to Birth Control Literature (1931); Economics, Sociology and the Modern World (“Carver Festschrift”) (editor, 1935); Medical History of Contraception (1936); The Challenge of Birth Control (1938); Practical Birth Control Methods (1938); and Your Marriage (1940). He also edited Marriage Hygiene (American editor, 1934-1937) and Longman’s Sociology Series (1940-1943).
Himes married Vera C. Hokanson in 1924. Hokanson died in a plane crash in October 1946. In 1947, Himes married Marian King Bailey. Himes died in Venice, Italy on June 6, 1949, after a fall in his hotel room. The cause of death is described either as a heart attack or as a fractured skull (2). At the time of his death, his unfinished research projects included two books, Social and Economic History of Contraception and Preparation for Marriage.

Processing Information
Charlotte Lellman revised the Biographical Note and wrote Scope and Content notes for this finding aid in September 2020 to bring it into compliance with the Center for the History of Medicine’s Guidelines for Inclusive and Conscientious Description (2020). In particular, Lellman eliminated the subjective tone of the Biographical Note and added information about Himes' eugenics beliefs. The previous version of the finding aid is being maintained for transparency around the descriptive process.
