Includes recordings and transcripts of interviews with 21 men with hemophilia, aged 40 and older, who were patients at the Boston Hemophilia Center. Participants in the project discussed their experiences with living with and being treated for hemophilia. Also includes interviews with five nurses and physicians specializing in hematology and hemophilia treatment, several of whom worked at the Boston Hemophilia Center.

Historical Notes

Interviews with men with hemophilia were conducted by Laura Gray and Christine Harland Chamberlain in 2004 - 2007. Interviews were conducted by Laura Gray 2005 – 2007 with a selection of caregivers working with men with hemophilia during the period covered by The gift of experience oral history interviews. Gray conducted the interviews in preparation for her book on the oral history project, The gift of experience. The project was carried out under the auspices of the Boston Hemophilia Center, a federally-funded hemophilia treatment center that offers comprehensive care to people with hemophilia and their families. The Boston Hemophilia Center operates a pediatric site at Children's Hospital Boston and a program for adults at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston.

The collection is divided into two series: I. Patient Interviews, 2004-2007 and II. Caregiver Interviews, 2005-2006. Oral histories are listed in each series alphabetically by subject's last name.

These records were donated to the Harvard Medical Library by Laura Gray, the coordinator of the project, in July of 2006.

Processing staff in the Center for the History of Medicine rehoused the records in acid-free enclosures, reformatted the sound files into .aif files and deposited the electronic files into the Digital Repository Service (DRS) for storage.

Charlotte Lellman updated this finding aid in September 2021 to bring it into alignment with the Guidelines for Inclusive and Conscientious Description (2020). She replaced the terms "hemophiliacs" (4 instances) and "retarded" (1 instance) to "men with hemophilia" and "people with intellectual disabilities," respectively.
