Scope and Contents
Photographs, slides and publications relating to William Burgess' career in industrial hygiene. Two objects: one Boston fire department helmet and one prototype powered air purifying respirator. The photographs, slides and publications were generated and accumulated by William Burgess between 1960-2010. Burgess was given the honorary Boston fire chief helmet in 1978 by the Department in recognition of his collaborative environmental monitoring work with Boston fire fighters. Burgess developed the prototype Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) in 1967-1968 for use by coke oven operators of the American Iron and Steel Institute. It was widely utilized.
