Historical Note

As requested by the building committee, architects Hugh Stubbins and Associates designed the Francis A. Countway Library as 'an active educational instrument' rather than a 'storehouse for books.' The central court, intended to encourage exploration of the building, is surrounded by separate stacks for books and periodicals, and a variety of small reading and study areas.
