Need for additional space to house the rapidly expanding collections became apparent almost as soon as the Library was dedicated. In 1903 the Board acquired land adjacent to the building and began raising funds for a stack addition. A basement was completed in 1908, but further construction was postponed during World War I. In 1930, a three-story shell was added over the basement, but the interior of the stack addition was never completed.
