In 1899 the Board of the Boston Medical Society voted to sell 19 Boylston Place and build a larger building near the Fens, an area that landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted had recently converted from mud flats into parkland. The Boston Medical Library remained at 8 The Fenway from 1901 until 1965, when its collections (over 245,000 volumes) were moved along with those of the Harvard Medical Library (over 166,000 volumes) into the new Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine on the campus of Harvard Medical School.
