Historical Note

The large dining hall in Vanderbilt Hall was named for Henry Pickering Bowditch, Professor of Physiology and Dean of Harvard Medical School from 1883-1893. The Bowditch coat of arms is set into its end wall. Vanderbilt Hall also included a club or faculty dining area consisting of two smaller connecting rooms; they were dedicated in 1947 as the Charles R. Holman Memorial Room.
