Arnold Arboretum and Boston Parks Commission Records: Guide.


This collection was transferred from John Alexander in 2015. John Alexander has been a plant propagator at Arnold Arboretum since 1976 and has acted on the board of the Living Collections Committee of the Arboretum. The focus of the collection is on Alexander’s correspondence with various parties to answer their questions about specific plants and trees and their propagation or to fill order requests for cuttings and seeds. The collection includes annual reports and notes relating to weather data and number of plants propagated. The dates range from 1975-2001, but the bulk dates of the materials are 1977-1985.

Researchers seeking to examine archival materials are strongly encouraged to make an appointment. The Director, or an office of origin, may place restrictions on the use of some or all of its records. The extent and length of the restriction will be determined by the Director, office of origin, and the Archivist and will be enforced equally for all researchers.

This collection includes correspondence sent from and to Jack Alexander regarding plant propagation and requests for information about specific plants and trees or requesting cuts or seeds from them. The collection also includes annual propagation reports that show the statistics and data about the weather and the plants propagated. Jack Alexander was involved in multiple committees and societies and materials in reference to those groups are included. The bulk dates of the collection range from 1977-1985.

The Arnold Arboretum Horticultural Library is a specialized collection devoted to the study of temperate woody plants. We collect works on botany, horticulture, floras, urban forestry and taxonomy. The library contains more than 25,000 volumes and 40,000 photographs, and includes an archive that both documents the Arboretum's history and is a repository for 19th, 20th, and 21st century horticultural and botanical collections.
