Included are surveys for Bristol and Essex counties and the Arnold Arboretum of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Also included are sixteen sectional survey maps for the southern part of Essex County, Massachusetts and a survey map for the Arnold Arboretum.

The soil surveys in this collection were completed by the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service between 1978 and 1984, in cooperation with the Massachusetts Agriculture Experiment Station. The surveys are comprised of reports and maps detailing the condition and agricultural viability of the soil in Bristol and Essex counties, as well as for the Arnold Arboretum.

The Arnold Arboretum Horticultural Library is a specialized collection devoted to the study of temperate woody plants. We collect works on botany, horticulture, floras, urban forestry and taxonomy. The library contains more than 25,000 volumes and 40,000 photographs, and includes an archive that both documents the Arboretum's history and is a repository for 19th, 20th, and 21st century horticultural and botanical collections.
