Topics covered in the material include Arboretum history, archaeology, acreage, boundaries, living collections, planting plans, natural features, stone features, structures, circulation system, agreements with the City of Boston, National Historic Landmark status, and revisions to the CRMP. The collection’s maps are of particular interest, showing property lines, acreage, water and sewer plans, circulation systems, natural woodlands vs. accessions, geology, and much more.

Historical note

Cynthia Jensen served as Director of Capital Projects at the Arnold Arboretum from 2005-2010. Jensen’s areas of expertise include program management, budget management, and strategic planning. Prior to joining the Arboretum, she worked for the African Wildlife Foundation and the World Wildlife Fund. Among her contributions to the Arboretum was managing construction of the Weld Hill Research and Administration Building, the institution’s first “green” building. She was also tasked with the preparation of the Cultural Resources Management Plan (CRMP).

The CRMP was developed to guide the Arboretum staff in the long-term management of character-defining features and archaeological resources within the Arboretum. The CRMP includes an inventory of these features and resources as well as cultural resources within the vicinity (half-mile radius) of the Arboretum. These resources are assessed within the context of the institution’s mission.

In general, the CRMP recommends treatment of character-defining features and archaeological resources consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes. Responsibility for the management of these resources belongs either to Harvard or the City of Boston, or it may be shared. This collection documents, in part, the historical division of responsibilities between the two entities. The CRMP was submitted to the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
