Founders and Members Papers

Scope and Contents note

This series is composed of biographical files and records of the founding members of the International Lilac Society. The biographical files include newspaper articles and photographs that document the work of selected individuals within the lilac community. The majority of records are internal correspondence and personal exchanges that date from the founding of the society in the 1970s until 2005 (the year of deposit). Subjects include material on board elections, newsletter publication and the Society’s mission to publish an accurate and comprehensive register of lilac cultivars. Internal correspondence regarding the monthly operation of the newsletter is also prominent within this group. The collecting contains published articles and manuscripts by many of the founding members. When known, the dates of publication are indicated. By the end of the 1990s, much of the society’s business was conducted via email. As a result, the series contains many printed copies of emails. Also included in the deposit of the society’s papers were the personal correspondence files of John C. Wister and Owen M. Rogers. This collection has been maintained in the arrangement in which it was received and is treated as a Sub-sub-series.
