First Universalist Society of Arlington, MA. Records, 1841-1965

This collection consists of membership, baptism, death, and financial records, as well as annual reports, minutes of parish meetings, papers of ministers, building and property records, the correspondence of the parish clerk, photographs and scrapbooks, minutes of the Board of Trustees, and records related to the consolidation of the Universalists and Unitarians in Arlington (1964-1965). The records are organized into six series: I. Official records, II. Ministers and ministry, III. Building and property records, IV. Denominational records, V. Organizations, and VI. History. These series are further divided into subseries, as indicated in the arrangement list above.

Biographical / Historical

In 1822, a group called the Universalist Society of West Cambridge was formed, and in 1840 theFirst Universalist Society of West Cambridge was organized. This Society constructed a meeting house which was dedicated in 1841, and the first minister of this Society was the Reverend Josiah Crosby Waldo. In 1867, West Cambridge became known as Arlington, and in 1885 the First Universalist Society of Arlington was incorporated. In 1965, the First Congregational Parish (Unitarian) and the First Universalist Society of Arlington merged to form the present day First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.
