Biographical / Historical

William Robert Hutchison (1930-2006) graduated from Hamilton College with a BA in English and history in 1951. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Oxford University, earning a second BA in modern history in 1953, and a PhD in American history from Yale in 1956. He was an instructor of history at Hunter College from 1956 to 1958; Professor of American Studies at American University from 1958 to 1968; and the Charles Warren Professor of History of Religion in America at Harvard Divinity School from 1968 to 2000. From 2000 to 2006 he was the Charles Warren Research Professor of American Religious History at Harvard Divinity School. His publications include The Transcendentalist Ministers (1959), The Modernist Impulse in American Protestantism (1976), Errand to the World: American Protestant Thought and Foreign Missions (1987), and Religious Pluralism in America: The Contentious History of a Founding Ideal (2003). He was a recipient of the Brewer Prize in 1957 from the American Society of Church History, a fellow of the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History (1966-67), Fulbright Senior Research Scholar at the Free University in Berlin (1976), and Fulbright Western European Regional Research grantee (1987). He held memberships in the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the American Studies Association, the American Society of Church History, the Unitarian Universalist Historical Association and the Massachusetts Historical Society.
