1 boxesThis collection contains the papers of Charles Woodhouse, the bulk of which is sermons. There are also letters, a discourse titled "True Manhood", a lecture titled "Manliness, or Morals and Manners", a poem titled "Two Armies", and one photograph. The sermons are arranged chronologically and many are undated. The 1853-1854 collection of letters is between Woodhouse and Reverend G. B. Clark.
Biographical / Historical
Charles Woodhouse (1812-1894) was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut on November 11, 1812. He married Lepha L. Guernsey. He was fitted for the Universalist ministry in Albany, New York, under Rev. Dr. I. D. Williamson; he was ordained on September 12, 1834 in Lansingburgh, New York. He was minister at the Brick Church in Brattleboro, Vermont (1835-1838), from which he moved to be the first minister at the Universalist church in Westmoreland, New Hampshire. He later held pastorate positions in Clarendon, Vermont; Fitchburg, Massachusetts; Louisville, Kentucky; St. Johnsbury Centre, Vermont; Boonsboro, Iowa; Moline, Illinois; Muscatine, Iowa; and Plainfield, Illinois. He moved to Chicago, Illinois, to study at the Homeopathic Medical College where he earned his M.D. in 1865 and then served as a Professor of Medical Jurisprudence and Insanity. He again moved to Rutland, Vermont to practice medicine and participate in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He died there on October 15, 1894.
