The bulk of this collection consists of Morgan’s sermons and addresses, which are arranged chronologically. Most of the sermons were delivered in Toronto, Canada, although some are addressed to congregations in Charlotte, North Carolina. In addition, the collection contains newspaper clippings and correspondence related to Rev. Morgan’s professional life including copies of his ordination service, letters from Dean Willard L. Sperry of Harvard Divinity School, and other Unitarian ministers. Also included within the collection are numerous radio talks, book reviews, and newspaper editorials.

Biographical / Historical

John Hanly Morgan (1918- ) was born in New Albany, Indiana. He received a BA from Ball State University in 1943, a BD from Harvard Divinity School in 1946, an MA from the University of Michigan in 1955, and a PhD in English literature from the University of Southern Florida. Ordained a minister in 1946 to the Waverly Unitarian Church of Waverly, Massachusetts, Morgan also served parishes in Charlotte, North Carolina; South Bend, Indiana; and Toronto, Canada. He was president of the Canadian Peace Congress from 1972 to 1986, and vice-president of the World Peace Council from 1983 to 1987. He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize and the Joliot-Curie Gold Medal for Peace (World Peace Council) in 1983 and 1984 respectively. He published numerous books of prose and poetry including Surfing the Tidal Wave (1994) and Pursuing the Dove: Reminiscences of the Peace Struggle (2001).
