The collection consists of four bound volumes of handwritten sermons, 1822-1834. The sermons are dated, and it is usually noted where they were delivered. They are based on standard scripture passages, and there are a number of funeral sermons; sermons to commemorate special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas; and a sermon exhorting the community to fast in response to a pestilence.

Biographical / Historical

William McMurray (1783-1835), a Reformed minister, was born in Salem, New York. He graduated from Union College in 1804, and was licensed to preach by the Associate Reformed Church in 1808. He was settled at Lansingburg, New York, from 1808 to 1811, and was pastor at the Reformed Church in Rhinebeck Flats, New York, from 1812 to 1820. From Rhinebeck he was called to the Reformed Dutch Church in Market Street, New York, and he was pastor there from 1820 to 1835. In 1823 he received the degree of doctor of divinity from Union College. He was married to Esther Kissam, and they had 11 children.
