The collection consists of Duncan's course notebooks, which he kept as a student, and several miscellaneous items. It is arranged into four groups: I. Meadville Theological School (1882-1885); II. Harvard Divinity School (1885-1886); III. Oxford University (1895-1896); and IV. Miscellaneous. The folders are headed by the course title, instructor's name (if known), date (if known) and the school at which it was offered. The miscellaneous section includes course notes where the school is unknown, several small notebooks with unspecific contents, a journal of notes on books of the Bible, and a book on the Old Testament.

Biographical / Historical

James Cameron Duncan (1860-1937) was born in Rothes, Morayshire, Scotland, and moved to the United States in 1879. In 1885, he graduated from Meadville Theological School in Pennsylvania. He spent the following year at Harvard Divinity School. Later, he spent the 1895-1896 academic year at Oxford University and the University of Berlin. He was ordained as a Unitarian minister in Clinton, Massachusetts, on June 17, 1886. He remained the minister of this church for more than 50 years. Also, he was active in the Worcester County Conference of Unitarian Churches, serving in the posts of secretary, treasurer, and president for a total of 40 years. In 1888 he married Jessie Geneva Fuller and they had two sons, Robert Fuller and James Cameron.
