Scope and Contents
The papers of Raymond Kenneth Black (1912-1989), cover the two years he attended HBS. The bulk of the material is from January 1942 to April 1943 and includes letters sent, photographic clippings, and cartoons.
The records in this collection document the various directions taken by HBS in response to a contemporary economic and social trends. Such trends include need for skilled production supervisors, emphasis on plant management, changing relationship with the Federal government, conversion from peacetime to wartime employment, defense industries, retraining executives for supervisory production positions, lack of students and faculty due to military service and the innovative programs developed to support war effort (ROTC, Navy Supply Corps, Quartermaster School).
Of particular note in this collection are the letters written by Black to his colleagues back at C & H Sugar Company in California describing HBS course material, professors and work load. In addition, he comments on New England weather, vacations taken, wartime rationing and indulges in "shop talk" with his professional colleagues back in California. This collection also includes photographs of HBS buildings and faculty clipped from unknown source and interspersed with letters.

Raymond Kenneth Black was born 1912. He graduated from Stanford University in 1933 and immediately went to work for C & H Sugar Company in San Francisco, California. In 1942, C & H paid for him to attend HBS. After his HBS graduation in 1943, Black returned to California and continued to work for C & H in the Finance department until his retirement in 1977. He died in 1989.
