Records of shoe stores: John Hicks Rogers of Boston, Mass., 1830-1888. Records of dry goods stores: Paul Revere, Jr. of Boston, 1847-1848; Chandler and Company of Boston, 1872-1970; William Tobin of Pittsfield, Mass., 1875. Records of a jewelry store: James Gerrish of Brandon, Vt., 1831-1859. Records of a book store: an unidentified book store in Boston, 1836. Records of hardware stores: Godfrey and Walsh of Albany, N.Y., 1823-1832; an unidentified hardware store in Boston, 1860-1872. Records of drug stores: George Goodwin and Company of Boston, 1874-1892 (heavily annotated price list); Downing's Drug Store of Hanover, N.H., 1882-1884. Records of department stores: A. and W. Bacon of Roxbury, Mass., 1864-1867; Harvard Cooperative Society of Cambridge, Mass., 1882-1942 (chiefly copies of minutes and secondary material); and D.L. Bodfish of Palmer, Mass., 1895-1903.

Biographical / Historical

This artificial collection of records pertaining to retail stores was created as part of a grant project to make collections available via the Harvard Library catalog, HOLLIS. In an effort to make these individual collections more discoverable this guide was created with descriptions taken from Manuscripts in Baker Library (4th ed., 1978) and local finding aids housed in the Special Collections reading room.
