Boston Gazette ledger

Scope and Contents

Ledger of subscriber names, locations, and payments maintained by the Boston Gazette from 1798 to 1826. Subscribers included individuals like Oliver Wendell (1733-1818; Harvard AB 1753), a Boston judge and member of the Harvard Corporation; Tudor Ice Company founder Frederic Tudor (1783-1864), and his brother-in-law, Maine landowner Robert Hallowell Gardiner (1782-1864; Harvard AB 1801); Lydia Hozier, of Nantucket; Mrs. Persis Davis of Concord; and Captain Isaac Hinckley (1783-1818), a shipmaster from Hingham. Corporate and institutional subscribers were spread across the United States, and included Harvard College Library, South Carolina Insurance Company, and the Portsmouth Athenaeum, in addition to a reading room in Havana, Cuba. There is an index of subscribers in the front of the volume.
