Amariah Frost, Jr., ledger

Scope and Contents

Ledger kept by lawyer Amariah Frost, Jr. (1750-1819), of Mendon (now Milford), Massachusetts, from 1786 to 1801, recording credits and debits for legal services, schooling, and room and board. Charges are for representing clients in lawsuits, taking depositions, drawing writs, certificates, licenses, and oaths, and serving subpoenas and summonses in Mendon, as well as Boston, Brookville, Holliston, and Cambridge. Accounts included fellow attorney and Massachusetts congressman Seth Hastings (1762-1831; Harvard AB 1782), whom he charged fees related to various lawsuits, as well as Thomas Fayerweather of Cambridge; Roxbury attorney Samuel Quincy; Elizabeth Desper of Milford; and Anna Ramsdell of Cumberland. There are also charges to Martha Read of Northbridge, in whose name Lucy Read, a minor, brought suit against Isaac Sheffield. Amariah Frost also educated his neighbors' children, and took in boarders. Payment was received in cash, labor, or commodities like liquor, veal, wood, and bricks. An account of Robin Mingo was settled by cash owed to him and his services mending shoes.
