United States Department of the Treasury bond book
Scope and Contents
Bond book, dated 1791, containing the names of individuals and businesses who loaned money to the American government during the Revolutionary War. Names include land developer Andrew Craigie (1743-1820) and merchant Joseph Barrell (1739-1804), of Boston, Massachusetts, and lawyer and politician Daniel C. Verplanck (1762-1834), jurist Edward Livingston (1764-1836), and merchants Horace & Seth Johnson & Co. of New York. There is a copy of a stock certificate issued by the state of South Carolina to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, merchant John Warder (1751-1828) tipped in to the volume.

The Department of the Treasury was established by an act of Congress in 1789 to manage government revenue. The first Secretary of the Treasury was Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804), who served from 1789 to 1795.
