Office files of the first dean of the Harvard Business School, Edwin Francis Gay. Also includes correspondence of Lincoln F. Schaub, Acting Dean, 1918-19, and Assistant Deans. Includes letters to and from Visiting Lecturers plus some letters from students and alumni.

The Dean's Office Correspondence Files contains letters exchanged between the Office of the Dean and correspondents during the deanship of Edwin F. Gay from 1908 to 1919. The Correspondence Files also include records from Acting Dean Lincoln F. Schaub interegnum in 1918-19, and letters exchanged with the Assistant Deans.

Biographical / Historical

Edwin Francis Gay (October 27, 1867-February 8, 1946) was the first Dean of Harvard Business School. Prior to the founding of HBS, Gay served as chair of Economic History at Harvard University. Harvard President offered the position to Gay on February 19, 1908. Gay oversaw developing a curriculum for the School and building a faculty. The School opened in September 1908 with 15 faculty, 24 regular students, and 35 special students. During Gay's term as Dean, HBS established the Bureau of Business Research, adopted the case method of teaching, and developed fundraising contacts with prominent New York business leaders. Gay announced his intention to leave the deanship early in 1919, with Lincoln Schaub serving as Acting Dean, until suceeded by Wallace Brett Donham.
