The collection includes minutes, ledgers, cashbooks, stock books, invoices, orders, photographs, advertisements, and unbound papers. There are gaps in the series, both bound and unbound, but the collection reveals much about the stationery business in Boston during this period. Included in the collection is an 1846 contract for a publication by Richard Henry Dana, Jr.

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Groom and Company was a stationery business located in Boston, Massachusetts began operations in 1833. At one time, Groom did its own printing, owned a binding subsidiary, and had four retail outlets in Boston. The company published books, almanacs, and calendars. Thomas Groom and Company occupied the following Boston buildings and addresses at various times: 148/150 (Federal Street United Shoe Machinery Building), 15 Franklin Street, 82 State Street (India Building/Stationers Hall), 5 State Street (Manufacturing Plant), and 45 St. James Avenue (Park Square Building). The company went into bankruptcy in June 1978.
